Marvelous -- and I know what you mean about stranding oneself from technology while visiting family. My parents don't even have a computer, so it's that much easier to totally get cut off, which is a good thing.

I have a french friend here who gave me two jars of homemade Quince Jelly. She grows the fruit in her yard. It is so delicate tasting and so beautiful to look at.
Your trip back home sounds wonderful--what a perfect way to welcome in 2010.

I agree, if the sky is blue it makes everything better somehow! And yes, moms can have an unrealistic idea of what one can actually eat ... just take a little taste of all the goodness so you don't regret it later!

I love to eat quince as a fruit. My mom makes quince jams in 2 ways. One with slices of the fruit, the other more similar to the gelée, where she grates the quince. I am not a great fan of jams or similar but I agree about quince: the smell is awesome and the color is amazing. Actually it is one of the rare jams I would eat and usually I add heaps of butter.
